Historical F(r)ictions

April 23, 2017 - 1:00pm
02-11-2017 to 04-23-2017 - By critically engaging with archival materials and living testimonies, Nicole Marroquin and Andres L. Hernandez rewrite two narratives of citizen struggle in Chicago: student walkouts on the Lower West Side between 1968-1973, and resident-led protests at the Cabrini-Green housing development in spring 1981. The artists transform the galleries into a suite of active public archives and invite participants to interpret the recent past in order to re-imagine solutions to the crises of our historic present.

This exhibit is located in the Michigan Avenue Galleries, 1st Floor South at the Chicago Cultural Center.

OF TIME AND TIDE

April 22, 2017 - 1:00pm
04-21-2017 to 04-29-2017 - OF TIME AND TIDE is a concert inspired by questions of place, time-sense and self. The two-weekend event features Jan Bartoszek’s 'Four Strong Winds' on both weekends with Madison, Wisconsin-based Kate Corby’s 'Harbor' on the first weekend and Victor Alexander’s 'Parting Shadows' on the second weekend.

'Four Strong Winds' probes the experience of cyclical time in the north. The sextet is informed by Bartoszek’s research of ways in which expression and body language in cold Northern locations have developed as a result of geography, weather, and other forces.

'Harbor', a duet performed by partners in work and life, Ben Law and Chih-Hsien Lin, is an exchange of ideas, a reorganization of shared space, a seeking of balance between power and submission, intimacy and conflict, waiting and action. The work began as an investigation of east and west, conceptually, in relation to identity, and in bodily and creative practices, and transformed into a conflation of a private, domestic space and a broader conversation about cultural exchange.

'Parting Shadows' by Victor Alexander is a quartet about perception and illusion. It is inspired by Plato’s cave allegory describing enchained, deluded people for whom shadows are the only reality. Originally performed by Hubbard Street 2, Parting Shadows is being remounted on Hedwig Dances.

this land is your land

April 20, 2017 - 1:00pm
03-31-2017 to 04-20-2017 - The Chicago Artists Coalition is pleased to present 'this land is your land,' a HATCH Projects exhibition featuring work by Azadeh Gholizadeh, Frances Lightbound, and Verónica Casado Hernández, and is curated by Ariel Gentalen.

'this land is your land' is an exhibition featuring three international artists investigating the invisible forces at play in our built environment. The American musician Woody Guthrie composed the famous, eponymous folk song as an alternative national anthem, one that sings the praises of a migrant traveler, whom can freely survey the beauty of the United States. Whereas Guthrie captured a populist postwar America that was open and progressive to him, these artists use their practices to explore the imagery and philosophy that attempt to keep us apart.

With insidious nationalism on the rise, the themes within these three bodies of work are highlighted in an urgent, more pressing tone. Azadeh Gholizadeh examines the man-made borders and stigma between the US and Iran, while Frances Lightbound tackles the visual language of infrastructure and development. Both artists look at how bodily autonomy is slowly stripped from us the more cognizant we become of the regulations within the Western world. Verónica Casado Hernández blends performance and textile-based work to address the feminized idealization of Lady Liberty, born from the Enlightenment and molded into a righteous figure, while posing questions about the ways the virtues of consent of the governed become twisted out of our reach.

Gods Do Handstands; Spices Simmer

April 20, 2017 - 1:00pm
03-31-2017 to 04-20-2017 - The Chicago Artists Coalition is pleased to present "Gods Do Handstands; Spices Simmer," a solo exhibition by BOLT Resident, Kaveri Raina.

“To paint as Raina paints is to build worlds, at least in the form of propositions. Her canvases are mostly scaled to the artist’s own body, often dyed with rich violets and greens, and occupied with flatly painted signs scrambled into effusive narratives about their own making. Her worlds are collapsed across the fronts and backs of loosely woven burlap supports, stretched over wooden frames—underlying structures that border the final compositions. Tectonic shapes are painted from the backside, pressing through the fabric’s weave, mapping the site of Raina’s ensuing fantasies. The paintings resist being coded into overly stabilized dichotomies; east is not always the back, nor west the front. Rather, the works model the flipsides of open-ended arguments with attention to where one locates a point of view. Spicy, earthy hues puddle juicily into post-industrial plastic (sub) continents that drift across all sides, embedding the burlap grid into sensuous formal arrangements.” —Matt Morris (Hyperreal Hanuman: Painting into Global Flows, 2016, Hammond Harkins Gallery)

Matter and material serve as the principle metaphors in Kaveri Raina’s work. Her paintings explore the often conflicting aspects of her hybrid identity and the pictorial push-and-pull of Western Modernism. Raina connotes the complex experience of being located between two cultures by highlighting the permeable surface of burlap as she paints from both the back and front of the textured fabric. As a result, this technique challenges the viewer to discern if the painting is behind, in front, or absorbed into the surface. For Raina, painting on the backside of the burlap creates a level of uncertainty, in which the reward is ultimately recognized by the striking outcome when one releases control.
