Romantic Duos at the Driehaus Museum - SOLD OUT

February 17, 2017 - 1:00pm
02-17-2017 to 02-17-2017 -

*Theatre Week tickets for this production are SOLD OUT. Full price tickets may still be available. Visit the theatre's website for more information. Follow @ChicagoPlays on Twitter or #CTW16 for inventory updates.*

When love is in the air, what could be more romantic than an intimate musical conversation? Romantic Duos explores the translation of great conversation into resplendent melody. Strauss wrote his Sonata for violin and piano when he was falling in love with his future wife, and his romantic impulses are clear in this work. Debussy’s evocative Syrinx for solo flute captures the sadness and longing of unrequited love in Pan’s pursuit of the elusive nymph Syrinx. Hindemith composed his Sonata for oboe and piano as part of his efforts to write sonatas for virtually every instrument of the orchestra, resulting in musical portraits of each instrument’s unique colors and tonalities. The concert concludes with the Chicago premiere of Dana Wilson’s luminous Gold Mosaic for flute, oboe, and piano, whose nature the composer says is akin to “holy fire.”

STRAUSS: Violin Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 18
DEBUSSY: Syrinx, L. 129
HINDEMITH: Sonata for oboe and piano
WILSON: Gold Mosaic (2015) – Midwest Premiere

A Disappearing Number

February 17, 2017 - 1:00pm
02-09-2017 to 02-19-2017 -

“A mathematician, like a painter, or a poet, is a maker of patterns … and beauty is the first test.”

The long-awaited Chicago premiere of this exquisite, internationally acclaimed play about love, math, and how the past and future connect. In 1913, a clerk in rural India named Srinivasa Ramanujan sends a letter to famed mathematician G.H. Hardy, filled with astonishing mathematical theorems. In the present, a math professor and a businessman fall in love. Told in a whirlwind of vignettes spanning history and time, A Disappearing Number is a love letter to numbers, blending the beauty of everyday relationships with the mysticism of the cosmos.

Winner of the 2007 Critics’ Circle Theatre, Evening Standard, and Laurence Olivier awards for Best New Play, TimeLine’s production of A Disappearing Number is a new and rare staging of this mesmerizing play that the Chicago Tribune raved “explodes with so much intellectual stimulus it makes you giddy, thrilled, intoxicated, ready to talk.”

Love's Labor's Lost

February 16, 2017 - 1:00pm
02-10-2017 to 02-16-2017 -

King Ferdinand of Navarre’s “no fun” edict includes scholarly endeavors, quiet contemplation and complete commitment to chastity for three entire years. His closest courtiers reluctantly sign on. But this is a comedy and it doesn’t take long for everyone to figure out that the whole thing is a bad idea and rules are meant to be broken—especially when the French Princess and her beautiful entourage arrive on the scene. The young men’s studies soon give way to secret letters and amorous vows as the women set out to teach the men a thing or two about love. The puns fly and the playwright’s wordplay take flight in this witty satire about young love with a surprising conclusion where real-life lessons are suddenly revealed. Former Artistic Director of Canada’s Stratford Festival Marti Maraden returns to Chicago Shakespeare to stage this charming comedy, following her celebrated productions of Much Ado About Nothing and Othello.

The Ghoul Exhibition

February 16, 2017 - 1:00pm
02-09-2017 to 02-16-2017 - Since Homer, we’ve been telling stories about how we kill each other. Even before Homer: if theater was born through dance and storytelling around a paleolithic fire, it was to tell stories of the hunt, the fight, the clash, the kill.

In the US, 90 people are shot every day. In 2016, 15,010 lives were taken by firearms (per gunviolencearchive.org). America’s fascination with guns, the spectacular terror of mass shootings, the bloodletting in its inner cities, and the power over life and death that a gun confers make up the sinews of The Ghoul Exhibition, a show that asks not just how, but why we kill each other.

Created and performed by Héctor Álvarez, The Ghoul Exhibition uses original and pre-existing texts, and a mix of physical theater, song, storytelling and audience participation to craft a dangerously intimate and unexpected dramatic experience that pushes the boundaries of the one-man show form. The result is a gripping and at times painfully funny catalogue of five stories. These include a teenage romance turned high school carnage, a modern day auto-da-fé for a white cop charged with the murder of a black teenager, and a screwball fable where mosquitos wield Beretta blue semiautomatics and orangutans scour the web for ammunition to fashion their deadly legacy.

Amidst all this madness, the gun glows like a talisman, shedding light on larger themes of race, rage and retribution; but ultimately, The Ghoul Exhibition seeks to create community with its audience, heal our hurts, foster forgiveness, and celebrate the resilience of our shared humanity.

The production was originally presented by The Tank, a New York City home for emerging artists.

The History Boys

February 16, 2017 - 1:00pm
02-09-2017 to 02-19-2017 - An unruly bunch of bright, funny boys in a British Grammar school are in pursuit of sex, sport, and a place at a good university-generally in that order. In all their efforts, they are helped and hindered, enlightened and bemused, by a maverick English teacher who seeks to broaden their horizons in sometimes undefined ways, and by a young history teacher who questions the methods, as well as the aim, of their schooling. In this 2006 Tony Award Winner, The History Boys raises not only universal questions about the nature of history and how it is taught but also questions about the purpose of education today.
