Romantic Duos

February 12, 2017 - 1:00pm
02-12-2017 to 02-12-2017 - When love is in the air, what could be more romantic than an intimate musical conversation? Romantic Duos explores the translation of great conversation into resplendent melody. Strauss wrote his Sonata for violin and piano when he was falling in love with his future wife, and his romantic impulses are clear in this work. Debussy’s evocative Syrinx for solo flute captures the sadness and longing of unrequited love in Pan’s pursuit of the elusive nymph Syrinx. Hindemith composed his Sonata for oboe and piano as part of his efforts to write sonatas for virtually every instrument of the orchestra, resulting in musical portraits of each instrument’s unique colors and tonalities. The concert concludes with the Chicago premiere of Dana Wilson’s luminous Gold Mosaic for flute, oboe, and piano, whose nature the composer says is akin to “holy fire.”

STRAUSS: Violin Sonata in E-flat major, Op. 18
DEBUSSY: Syrinx, L. 129
HINDEMITH: Sonata for oboe and piano
WILSON: Gold Mosaic (2015) – Midwest Premiere

Magic City

February 12, 2017 - 1:00pm
02-11-2017 to 02-12-2017 - Loosely adapted from Edith Nesbit’s 1910 novel, Manual Cinema’s Magic City tells the story of nine-year-old Philomena, whose great love is building miniature structures out of books, toys, and other found objects from around her house. One day, her older sister (and only legal guardian) Helen announces that she is engaged to marry, and the two go to live at the mansion of Helen’s fiancé, Brandon. Left alone in her vast new home, forced to make friends with her annoying stepbrother Lucas, Philomena secludes herself in the attic where she builds the biggest miniature city she’s ever made. Later that night, Philomena wakes up to discover that his city has come alive. As she steps through the city gates, her adventure begins.

Told with wit, insight, and imagination, Magic City was one of the first “modern” fantasy novels. Using overhead projectors, paper shadow puppets, live actors in silhouette, miniature toy theater, and live musical accompaniment, Manual Cinema’s adaptation of Magic City will update the novel for a contemporary retelling.

Sweeney Todd

February 12, 2017 - 1:00pm
02-10-2017 to 02-19-2017 - It’s just another day in 19th Century England, and Benjamin Barker has returned home. The only thing is, it has been 15 years since the once fresh-faced barber has been home to see his family. He was unjustly sentenced to prison on trumped up charges by the corrupt Judge Turpin, who had his leering eyes on the barber’s beautiful wife. Upon his arrival to the pie shop – where he and his family once lived above – his old friend and confidant Mrs. Lovett unravels the events of the past decade. She explains about the seduction of his wife by the Judge, which led her to take her own life. And to sharpen that pain of his loss, she breaks the news that the Judge adopted his daughter and is raising her as his own. Barker vows revenge for these atrocities and turns to the tools and skills with which he’ll exact his plan: a razor and a barber chair. While the ensuing events are unfortunate for some, others – including Mrs. Lovett, her struggling pie shop and her customers – quickly prosper from the body count.

Some critics call Sweeney Todd Sondheim’s most perfect score, filled with ravishing beauty. Others have described it as a pitch-black comedy filled with thrills and terrors, while others have heralded it as one of the single greatest achievements of American musical theater in the last 50 years. Decide for yourself and experience Paramount Theatre’s Sweeney Todd.
