Global Visionaries

May 7, 2017 - 1:00pm
04-26-2017 to 05-07-2017 -

For its annual spring engagement, The Joffrey Ballet presents Global Visionaries, a program of three contemporary ballets including a world premiere by Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman, the Chicago Premiere of The Miraculous Mandarin by San Francisco Ballet Resident Choreographer Yuri Possokhov, created specifically for The Joffrey Ballet, plus the return of Mammatus by internationally renowned choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Global Visionaries is presented in 10 performances only, April 26-May 7, 2017.

Celebrated around the globe for his originality and humor, Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman brings his unique cinematic vision to the Joffrey with a new work (untitled). Ekman has collaborated with classical and contemporary companies worldwide with award winning works that both entertain and challenge the observer. Works in Joffrey’s repertoire include the Chicago Premiere of Tulle, which took Chicago by storm in 2015, along with his wild and rhythmic Episode 31, which had its Joffrey premiere during the 2013 Chicago Dancing Festival.

In a unique collaboration with The Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Ballet Resident Choreographer Yuri Possokhov has created a new work specifically for The Joffrey Ballet, The Miraculous Mandarin, a magnificent tale of a girl forced to act as a decoy by thugs, luring a wealthy mandarin to his tragic fate. Set to Bela Bartok’s 1926 score, Possokhov reimagines this story ballet for seven dancers to explore the tragic, dark passions between men and women. The Chicago Philharmonic, led by Joffrey Music Director Scott Speck, will provide live accompaniment of Bartok’s score on stage alongside the company during every performance. The Miraculous Mandarin made its world premiere with The Joffrey Ballet and The Cleveland Orchestra in March 2016.

Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Mammatus returns to Chicago after its world premiere with The Joffrey Ballet in September 2015. This powerful, 20-minute abstract piece features 20 dancers in a series of ensembles and duets and is set to contemporary composer Michael Gordon’s Weather One. A minimalist stage, equipped with tree branches lit with LED lights, sets the scene for Mammatus while dancers represent surreal insects and birds through sinuous and organic movements to explore the nonlinear essence of nature and turbulent cloud formations. Dancer-turned-choreographer, Lopez Ochoa, known for her close collaborations with dancers and fierce improvisational talent, has choreographed critically acclaimed works for numerous dance companies across the nation and around the world.

Six Characters in Search of an Author

May 7, 2017 - 1:00pm
04-07-2017 to 05-07-2017 - Ghostlight Ensemble will present 'Six Characters in Search of an Author' this spring as an examination of the modern Chicago storefront theatre scene.

In Pirandello's classic metatheatrical play, six characters come looking for life and find the theatre world acutely unable to make them real. Ghostlight’s productions strips away the masks – literally and figuratively – and uses the relationships between characters, actors, authors, directors and audience to expose the institutional racism and biases found in modern theatre.

'Six Characters in Search of an Author' takes on new relevance in this age of reality television when fiction is often realer than reality.

The Great and Terrible Wizard of Oz

May 7, 2017 - 1:00pm
03-17-2017 to 05-07-2017 - The House Theatre of Chicago announces the final production in their 15th season, The Great and Terrible Wizard of Oz, adapted from L. Frank Baum’s book by The House Theatre Company Member Phillip Klapperich and directed and choreographed by The House Theatre Company Member Tommy Rapley.

First produced by The House Theatre of Chicago in their third season, The Great and Terrible Wizard of Oz returns with modern twist on the classic American tale. A twister lands our teenage Dorothy and her house in Munchkinland. Right on top of a wicked witch. Her phone won't work, her dog is scared, and she's desperate to get home to what little family she has left. But the town's residents are gleefully celebrating Dorothy's powers as the fabled Witch Slayer. When Glinda and the munchkins can't convince her to stick around and be their new hero, they send her off on the road of yellow brick wearing enchanted boots soaked in the red blood of the slain witch. A favor from the fabled all-powerful Wizard will be her only chance to get out of Oz.

Unsure about her path forward, Dorothy teams up with a one-day-old Scarecrow, a heartbroken Tin Woodsman, and the Cowardly Lion. Her boots, and their friendships, guard against lots of danger on their way to the Emerald City. But the Wizard will ask the Witch Slayer to live up to her violent and vengeful new name in exchange for a return ticket to her old life. The forest creatures of Oz come to life with puppets large and small by Jesse Mooney-Bullock (The Hammer Trinity), and music from company member Kevin O'Donnell. With fighting monkeys flying in the air overhead, and enveloping projections on all sides of the theatre, Dorothy's travels will be filled with mystery, wonder, and surprise. If she can get home, Kansas may never be the same.

Dylan Brody's Driving Hollywood

May 6, 2017 - 1:00pm
05-03-2017 to 05-20-2017 - Blue Panther Productions presents award winning humorist and actor Dylan Brody in his new solo show 'Dylan Brody's Driving Hollywood' starting at Chicago's Apollo Theater. The show's multi-city tour takes off in Chicago before traveling to Barcelona, London and New York.

Driving into Hollywood to meet a big time player that could change the course of his career, Dylan Brody flashes back to his boyhood in Schuylerville, New York where his precociousness made him a regular at the principal's office. His father, a Skidmore College professor also called in ostensibly to reprimand his son, instead responded by generously offering to “hear both sides of the story”. With his signature wit and playfulness he goes on to describe early misunderstandings working in the entertainment industry and his adult life as a comic and writer in Los Angeles. In a town where success and fame are constantly almost happening, Brody's hilarious stories combine passion and heartbreak with unique humor to leave us with a spark of hope at the intersection of art and commerce.
