Chicago Voices Gala Concert

Lyric Opera Creative Consultant Renée Fleming and Lyric Unlimited join forces to present Chicago Voices, a multi-year initiative celebrating Chicago’s vibrant, diverse vocal music culture. For more information about the full initiative, visit chicagovoices.org

A signature event of Chicago Voices is the Gala Concert on Saturday, February 4 at the Civic Opera House. Renée Fleming will perform alongside an array of vocal talent with deep ties to Chicago, paying tribute to the city’s rich musical traditions and its wide-reaching influence across genres. This extraordinary evening of vocal artistry will include top singers in blues, jazz, rock, folk, hip-hop, gospel, and classical music. The evening will feature performances and musical collaborations by Shemekia Copeland, The Handsome Family, Jessie Mueller, Matthew Polenzani, John Prine, Michelle Williams, and more artists still to be announced! Music director for the gala concert is five-time Jeff award winner Doug Peck.

A unique, eclectic performance that is sure to be one of the highlights of Chicago’s cultural season, join us for Chicago Voices Gala Concert, and celebrate the glory of the human voice in its many sounds and styles.

Chinese New Year Dumpling Making Dinner

It's not too late to celebrate the New Year! The Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rooster, begins January 28. The Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute will showcase the 1,800-year-old Chinese tradition of dumpling making during its 13rd Annual Dumpling Making Dinner.

Chinese families celebrate the New Year by making dumplings, know as jiaozi. a coin was hidden in a dumpling, which believed to bring its recipient wealth. The Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, comes from an agrarian tradition and the dumpling making dinner honors this history by encouraging people to make the food that they will eat. 

Guests to the New Year dinner will learn the history and significance of the Chinese dumpling and how to prepare the dumplings. After which they will be served a full meal may including Chicken Corn Soup, Crab Rangoon, Vegetable Egg Roll, Deep Friend Shrimp Ball, Chicken and Vegetarian Dumplings, Kung Pao Chicken, Fish with Soy Bean Paste, Mongolian Beef, Braised Bean Curd with Black Mushroom, Vegetable Friend Rice, and Water Chestnut Cake.

An enigmatic young woman from Dublin finds herself the center of attention at a local pub. Pints in hand, the local barflies recount ghostly yarns of the supernatural to impress and entertain her, but it is the visitor herself who relates the most unsettling story of all. McPherson wrote the hauntingly beautiful and humorous play The Weir at the age of 26, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play, and the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright.

The Champion Of Champions

These performers will use everything in their comedic arsenal to win over the audience's favor, get the most laughs, and become that evening's champion.
